According to the Des Moines Register, presidential candidate Bernie Sanders supports expanding voting rights to convicted felons.
Senator Sanders’ home state of Vermont is one of two states that allows voting rights to its convicted citizens. When asked about the issue at a town hall in Iowa, he stated, “I think that is absolutely the direction we should go.” He further went on to say, “you’re paying a price, you committed a crime, you’re in jail. That’s bad,” Sanders said, “but, you’re still living in American society and you have a right to vote. I believe in that, yes, I do.”
Whether or not this will affect the Democratic primaries, the jury is still out with voters expressing condemnation and support for Senator Sanders’ proposal. A recent poll still shows Senator Sanders in 2nd place, trailing Joe Biden in the polls but also with the most money raised the first quarter at 18 million.
